BRADEN MCDONALD
Creation
Last Lamb Music (2003)

review by Dene Bebbington

Have you ever wondered what the sound of creation was like? Well, Creation is one man's attempt to musically describe the creation as described in the Biblical book of Genesis. For the non-religious out there I can say that you shouldn't be put off by the Biblical theme because the music on this album is very good and can be appreciated without caring what the seven days of creation were supposed to be or whether Genesis is correct. There's one track for each day of creation, most are under seven minutes long as the whole album is not long - it clocks in at under forty three minutes. The feel of the music is generally positive and upbeat as one would expect given the theme - I think this is one of the things that warmed me to the album.

A sense of expectancy permeates "1st Day" as synth washes and refrains build up over the course of the track, eventually they are joined by drums adding to the grandness of this theme which ends in a crescendo followed by a restrained whistling synth sound. Most of the following tracks continue in a celebratory vein, apart from "3rd Day" (when land and sea were separated and plants were created) which is slower, here piano plays mostly in a calm fashion over synth washes. On some tracks in particular -- "5th Day" springs to mind -- there's a liveliness which conveys a real sense of activity and vitality. In "5th Day" lively electronic rhythms and drums easily make one imagine the hustle and bustle of sea and air animals that were created on this day.

Braden lists artists such as Vangelis and Patrick O'Hearn as influences; one can detect this to an extent but Creation amply demonstrates Braden's own musical sensibilities. I recommend it as a fine electronic music album - one that may even stir some spiritual, though not necessarily religious, or awe inspired feelings.
