ANNOUNCEMENT

Due to the labor-intensive nature of gathering news items from internet sources, beginning next issue, only news items actually emailed to Wind and Wire and that are pre-formatted for inclusion on this page will be posted. I regret this action, but I do not have time to comb through all the postings, edit them, and then insert them on this page. I ask that any artist or label who desires coverage here email me their annoucenments if they want them posted in an issue.

Again, I regret this decision, but time constraints require it.

SPECIAL BIG NEWS OF THE MONTH

The first issue of the new hard copy magazine covering EM and ambient music, E-dition, is coming in February. Go here to subscribe or for more info. This two-language venture (Dutch and English versions will be published) is headed up by the fine folks at Groove (Kees Aerts and Ron Boots) as well as people from the now defunct KLEMzine. SHOW YOUR SUPPORT! There are too few magazines out there covering these genres.

NEW AND UPCOMING RELEASE INFO

(note: CD info comes from mailing lists and press releases; descriptive comments below are not from a Wind and Wire reviewer, unless specifically annotated as such)

  • Kwook - Unidentified Feathered Object: Kwook (from Australia) was on the first Databloem compilation, this is his first full length album for dataObscura. Inspired by Terry Riley and Autechre. The music is a flowing mix of delicate melodic elements served over a bed of space. Samples can be heard on the Databloem site: http://www.databloem.com/0_kwook.htm
  • Ambient artist Thom Brennan announces: "New Raingarden Music label is up and running on line. The first releases are posted. These consist of the former mp3.com titles. Upcoming by March, a new album Silver. You can preview excerpts at http://www.thombrennan.com , and follow the link to "Silver Excerpts." I have posted to the website a new sign up box for the new Raingarden Music News list.
  • Here's the latest news from ambient artist IXOHOXI: "I have been communicating with Numina recently and we will soon begin work on Starfarer's Tales Volume II . Although this is a year later than we originally planned, mostly due to other commitments and musical projects, we are excited with what we have put together so far as some basic starting points. If you want to listen to Volume I you can go to the IXOHOXI music store at http://store.mixonic.com/ixohoxi and listen to sample tracks. They are streaming at 64kbps to save bandwidth but it gives you a good idea of what Volume I is like. Numina and I hope Volume II will be an adventurous extension of that style of atmospheric space-music, and longer (hopefully 70 minutes).

I am currently mastering Micronicom. More info on that release soon.

The IXOHOXI store at the above URL is slowly being updated with my back catalog, one CD at a time. The new CD store produces a nicer product, both in sonic quality and package design, than the older MP3 site. 9 titles are available including SF Tales I with Numina, and the Yoga Soundscapes two CD set. More will be added over the next month or two.

  • Ultra-prolific Brannan Lane has new project coming out with Amir Baghiri: "The first CD, Lucid Circles, will be a very deep and silent ambient work. A series of collaboration CDs are planned between these artists.Amir Baghiri - Additive fm and analog synthesizers, sequencers, various handplayed percussion, neys, powerslide, processed nature sounds, distant voices, guitars. Brannan Lane - Digital and analog synthesizers, acoustic and sampled percussion, sequencers, treatments
  • Aidan Baker - Threnody I : Lamentation (NULLL017). The first release in a series of three, this is ambient/drone entirely created by electric guitar. This full-length album features one long organic, mesmerising, dark yet beautifull ambient soundscape. A flight over alien landscapes, through dense mists on the waves or calming guitar-drones. Very addictive music...More info:http://nulll.darkwood.com
  • Jason Sloan's latest CD: "WINTERWOMB CD TO BE RELEASED DECEMBER 8, 2003 winterwomb is being quietly released on the heels of jason's successful mid 2003 CD, still. Winterwomb is a live CD which presents three shows from 2002 and 2003. the first track, recorded last december at baltimore's bottom floor, features the entire 25minute set. the second track is a 30 minute excerpt from jason's 65min radio concert on WXPN's star's end this past august. the disc closes out with an experimental live performance from this past november broadcast live via the internet. this disc is unique as it is the first CD to feature jason's layered & dence live performance sound. still very ambient by nature, these live sets also bring lots of grit and texture into the smear of sound jason has become known for. winterwomb is presented in a unique .25" thick, 5" x 7.5" clear plastic housing with vellum sleeve. This CD is available only over at http://www.jasonsloan.org"

Ultimae Records, an excellent (per Bill Binkelman, who will be reviewing three of their recordings soon) ambient and electronica label based in France, is on the lookout for music. A recent email to an ambient list reads as follows:

"Dear all,

I am working on a compilation project to be released this year. I wish to dedicate this journey to people who see from within, with all their senses, not their open eyes. The style is atmospheric and floating, very little beat if any. Neither too sweet nor too dark. Tracks can be sent for my attention to the address below until beginning of April.

Feel free to contact me by email if you want to discuss this project.

You may already know us for our downtempo compilation and various ambient albums. For the first time we shall walk the atmospheric path.

Kind regards and best wishes,

Sunbeam (aka Mahiane)

A reminder that an excellent ambient and EM website has re-opened. It's Electronic Shadows, run by Glenn Folkvord. Here's what he has to say: "I havent really mentioned it here yet, but my electronic music website
www.electronicshadows.com is now online again, since last month [November, ed.] in fact. Some of you will remember it from the first round a couple of years ago, and the site has now been redesigned and enhanced but with the usual news, views and interviews about electronic and ambient music.
