review by Dene Bebbington Perry Wood seems to have the kind of experience needed for creating an album for animal healing: he's competent with several musical instruments, is involved with animals as a horse trainer and horse whisperer, and is a devotee of meditation. As with most New World releases, it doesn't really matter if you believe in new age healing techniques though, because the music can usually be enjoyed without reference to all that stuff. The album is split into two tracks both of which are over thirty-three minutes long and those tracks could be said to comprise several movements. The first track, "Shared Energy," begins with string and synth washes and is then joined by piano playing an uncomplicated and pleasant melody in the foreground. It then morphs into the next "movement" where the mood changes to become more contemplative as the piano takes more of a backseat role in favour of a mild clarinet-like sound for a while, then the piano melody reprises. As the piece progresses, the interplay of instruments change with the constant being the gentle use of synth pads in the background. The second track. "Together." also makes much use of synths and strings to create a relaxing background against which piano and other instruments (including acoustic guitar) perform delicate melodies. It's all quite relaxing, a little too long, and somewhat minimalist with a few melodies being repeated and reprised - it reminded me of David Sun's Tranquillity in those respects. Unless you're a real new age fan, I think this kind of music works best as background. It is calming, but could fail to hold one's attention for the whole hour and six minutes. I don't see any reason why Animal Healing shouldn't be enjoyed by people without animals or an interest in healing. |
