KEVIN KENDLE
Music for Yoga - Relaxing Yoga
New World Music (2002)

review by Dene Bebbington

The New World label is known for its musical focus on healing and relaxation with collections of videos and albums like those in the Mind, Body & Soul series. Kevin Kendle's Relaxing Yoga is volume 1 in the Music for Yoga series, and is used on a Yoga video that is part of the Mind, Body & Soul series. I can't comment on how well the music goes with Yoga as that's not something I've done; however, I once did a couple of sessions of T'ai Chi and can imagine this music going well with gentle exercise.

Anyone who has heard music by Kevin will know that it tends to be of the easygoing, somewhat sweet, new age kind. Not surprisingly Relaxing Yoga is not a departure from that style, and though I'm sometimes ambivalent about new age music I did enjoy this album.

The album is divided into four named parts which are segued together rather than being discrete tracks. A common thread among all four parts is a lovely synth like effect which has a warm quality, as though it represents sunbeams pouring down over the Earth. This sound comes and goes throughout the album.

How the music begins in the opening track "Sunlight" is essentially how it goes till the end: relaxing and gentle melodies are created using a variety of traditional instruments such as piano, acoustic guitar, flute, percussion etc. There are several emotional high points as the pace picks up for a few minutes before dropping back to the laid back pace and feeling.

You don't need to be doing Yoga to enjoy this music. In my view it's ideal when you want music to relax, or just as a pleasant background when doing other things.
