review by Bill Binkelman This may just wind up being the best acoustic guitar instrumental album released this year. I know that I can't get enough of it, no matter how many times I play it; it just begs for hitting the repeat button on my CD player. The album's title is perfect, 'cause like a cool breeze is refreshing, yet relaxing, so is the music on the eleven tracks on this CD. Kohala is a trio of guitarists: Kevin Teves, Charles Michael Brotman, and Charlie Recaido, and this is their first recording I have heard. I have been missing something special, if this CD is any indication. These three artists have recorded some of the most beautiful acoustic instrumental tunes I've heard in a few years - this music is fantastic! Don't think this album is overtly Hawaiian slack-key oriented, 'cause you'll be wrong. Instead, Cool Breeze is loaded with easy-going laid-back acoustic guitar numbers that are perfect for cruising the two-lane backroads or sittin' and chillin' on a sunny (or cloudy) afternoon. I mean it, children. This here CD is a true multi-purpose listening experience. Never too frenetic, never too sedate; it's the prototypical "just right." How good is this recording? I couldn't even begin to single out a track as a favorite; they're all grade A top choice. From the pleasantly lazy pace of "Summer Stroll," to the slyly sexy "Winds of Kohala" to lively upbeat "Samba Pacific" to the closing nostalgia and gentility of " Hills of Heather," every one of these songs is as perfect as can be. I couldn't come up with a criticism of these three musicians if I wanted to. Simply put, if you enjoy the sound of an acoustic guitar, strummed or picked, in the service of instantly enjoyable melodies, you will fall in love with Cool Breeze. Seldom do I hear an album that, on first playing, convinces me of its brilliance and is deserving of a rave review." No warming up period needed with this CD. Kohala are exceptional talents and the proof is everywhere on this exceptional album. Without any hesitation, I give it my highest recommendation. |
