KEVIN KERN
The Winding Path
Real Music (2003)

review by Dene Bebbington

Kevin Kern is known for his delightful and relaxing music, and The Winding Path continues that tradition admirably - I feel sure that his fans will love this album. Kevin composed all ten tracks on this album and has used several guest musicians on several tracks; so in addition to piano and keyboards we hear acoustic guitar, flute, harp, and violin to name a few of the instruments played by the guests. They all complement each other nicely to create a well-rounded, highly listenable album of easygoing music.

The first couple of times I played this CD it made me imagine walking a path through an airy forest, that's partly because of the picture on the front of the sleeve notes but the music really conveys that impression. As someone who likes walking and soaking up scenery and the beauty of naturte this certainly helped me appreciate the music more. For those who might want a helping hand in imagery there's a "guided visualisation" in the liner notes, though I would recommend a real walk that you can visualise.

Restful and contemplative are two words that comes to mind if I was to briefly sum up The Winding Path. Throughout the mood isn't light or dark per se, it's just calm and ideal for letting your mind lazily wander from one thought to another. On many pieces we hear the piano taking the lead with the melody as other instruments are used judiciously to create a good balance of sounds. The acoustic guitar is also used in several pieces to play a melody.

For me, none of the tracks really stood out above the others, and on this kind of album I think that's a good thing. That way it maintains the peaceful flow of the music and mental images the listener has conjured up. It's a must have album for anyone seeking tranquil or meditative music.
