COMING ATTRACTIONS

Coming soon to Wind and Wire...

  • Next month, I'll be publishing interviews with two of the brightest stars on the ambient music horizon, each one of them shining a different "color" and contributing different shades of music to the genre's spectrum
    • Rik McLean, (the man behind mara's torment), talks about the burgeoning Toronto electronic music scene and his past and future music
    • Richard Roberts, a.k.a. Zero Ohms, muses over the mixture of his flutes and his electronics as he records music that "offers no resistance" (hence his pseudonym)

Upcoming reviews (not a conclusive list) in future issues:

Ambient/Spacemusic/EM/Electronica

  • RUDY ADRIAN - Concerts in the USA
    • "Re-recording" his recent series of concerts in America, New Zealand neo-Berlin keyboard wiz Adrian releases an album that combines drifting ambience with gentle yet insistent sequencer music
  • AMONGST MYSELVES - Sacred Black
    • Part spacemusic, part ambient and dark ambient, the music on this CD is evocative and ambitious
  • EMBRACING THE GLASS - mandala for chaos
    • An alloy of electronics and voice that offers a stunning semi-dark excursion into starkly beautiful soundscapes suffused with humanity
  • LEMONGRASS - Windows
    • Trippy, bubbly, and lots of fun, this assortment of chill-out, dub, and electronica will put a smile on your face as it cools you off
  • SAMSA - The Laurentian Divide
    • Dark and disturbing rumbles and drones that are sure to satisfy those who like their ambience full of shadow and foreboding
  • SYLKEN - Ping
    • With the three long pieces on this release, Sylken proves that they are a group which excels at pushing the envelope of live ambient music, as the recording goes from darker subtly dissonant passages to moments of drop-dead beauty
  • STEVE VERITY - TimeStar
    • Bringing together retro and cutting edge electronics, Verity explores rhythmic and floating electronic territory which will please fans of Jarre, Schulze, as well as lovers of modern day EM
  • ZERO OHMS - True Degrees of Freedom
    • One of the most immersive recordings of recent years, listening to this CD on headphones is almost disorienting in its ability to transport you away from the here and now

New Age/World/Adult Contemporary

  • DEEP SKY DIVERS - Natural Power
    • First rate contemporary instrumental music that is catchy and accessible from the very first listen and gets better with each playing
  • LLEWELLYN - Journey to the Faeries
    • Yet another great effort from the English master of electronic new age music, this time painting musical pictures of the land of Faerie in an enchanting and beguiling style
  • TERRY OLDFIELD - a time for peace
    • On this all-instrumental album, multi-instrumentalist Oldfield records his best music in years, all of it beautiful and serene in the best new age music tradition
  • STEPHEN PAGE AND RICHARD CHURCHYARD - Spiritual Oasis
    • Long-form new age music that is more dramatic than relaxing, combining Page's keyboards and Churchyard's guitars in a sweeping neo-romantic style
  • TANIA ROSE - 43 Angels
    • As you would expect from the title, this classic new age release is filled with ethereal and beatific music but is not always predictable, as one track even sounds like Tim Story!
  • CONNI ST. PIERRE - Beyond the skys
    • The third part in a trilogy, this is a truly outstanding electronic/acoustic recording that combines new age melodicism with a strong undercurent of ambient sensibility a la Coyote Oldman
  • TORCHLIGHT CREEK - Two Moons
    • Combining acoustic instruments with synthesizers in unique ways, this debut release is a rare blend of disparate elements that works surprisingly well

NOTE: Not every title above in either grouping will be reviewed in the next issue; some will not occur for several months yet
